China Vows Stable Energy for Taiwan After Potential Reunification
Chen Binhua, a spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said, “Peaceful reunification would create significant opportunities for Taiwan's economic and social development and bring tangible benefits to Taiwan compatriots.”
Beijing views Taiwan as a “breakaway province,” while Taipei has maintained its stance on independence since 1949. Chen emphasized that following reunification, cross-Strait connectivity would be fully realized, enabling solutions for Taiwan’s shortages in electricity, natural gas, and crude oil. “After peaceful reunification, cross-Strait connectivity would be fully realized, making it possible to address Taiwan's shortages in electricity, natural gas and crude oil,” he added, further promising that the mainland “will also ensure that Taiwan residents enjoy more affordable, cleaner and more stable energy supplies.”
In a related development, China’s Foreign Ministry criticized Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te’s administration over remarks regarding Japan’s colonization of the island. The ministry said the administration “brazenly whitewashed Japanese aggression and colonial rule over Taiwan, siding with the lie fabricated by Japanese aggressors.”
Over the weekend, Lai had accused the main opposition Kuomintang of treating Taiwanese citizens “worse than Japanese colonial rule,” according to reports. A Chinese official responded: “This is a grave disregard for history and a disgraceful betrayal of the nation. The bitter and deep memories of blood and tears should not be forgotten or distorted.”
